Clayton Neighbors began working with RSVP, Inc. in January 2024. At the time, he had recently relocated from Texas to the Richmond area, arriving without a local support system and determined to find meaningful employment. Despite facing a series of personal challenges, Clayton remained committed to securing a position that would provide financial stability and a welcoming, supportive environment.
Employment Specialist Jennifer Hutheram supported Clayton throughout his journey, guiding him through situational assessments and job development. Together, they completed two assessments and actively participated in multiple job interviews and job fairs throughout the year.
In late 2024, Clayton connected with Amanda, the housekeeping manager at the downtown Richmond YMCA. He introduced Amanda to Jennifer and shared his interest in working at the YMCA. Amanda quickly became an advocate for Clayton, expressing her enthusiasm about bringing him on board as a housekeeper, especially with the E. Franklin Street YMCA preparing to reopen after renovations.

Amanda spoke regularly with her branch manager about Clayton, who initially suggested he volunteer to demonstrate his skills. After just one volunteer shift, the manager remarked that Clayton’s cleaning of the locker room exceeded expectations, even joking that Clayton had better attention to detail than Amanda herself.
For nearly two months, Clayton volunteered at the YMCA, consistently demonstrating excellent time management and an outstanding eye for detail. Amanda would creatively test his thoroughness, such as hiding sugar packets and coffee stirrers in restroom corners and routinely conducted walk-throughs with Clayton and his job coach to provide guidance on maintaining cleanliness across various facility areas. She also trained him in chemical safety, trash removal procedures, and customer service best practices.
Thanks to Amanda’s mentorship and Clayton’s hard work, he officially joined the YMCA team as a housekeeper on June 16, 2025.

From initial intake to job placement, Clayton’s journey was marked by persistence and resilience. He is grateful to have found a supportive employer and community where he can grow his skills and continue building a meaningful career. We are incredibly proud of all the effort Clayton has put in to reach this milestone.
Congratulations again, Clayton!
