A Sweet Step Toward Career Readiness: Dawnta’s WBLE at Mill Street Sweets
Dawnta recently participated in a hands-on Work-Based Learning Experience (WBLE) at Mill Street Sweets, where he had the opportunity to explore what it is like to work in a small, customer-focused business in the heart of Occoquan.
From the moment he arrived, Dawnta approached the experience with professionalism and enthusiasm. After being introduced to the owner, Craig, Dawnta received a full tour of the shop and learned about daily operations, employee expectations, and product knowledge. Craig shared training materials used for new hires, including ice cream scooping procedures, business guidelines, and a flavor chart — giving Dawnta real insight into what onboarding looks like in a retail food service environment.

What made this experience especially meaningful was the hands-on learning. Dawnta had the opportunity to fill a Jelly Belly jelly bean holder and scoop ice cream for milkshakes, practicing proper portioning and food handling techniques. He also observed how a root beer float is made and watched the cash register process during a customer transaction, gaining exposure to customer service flow and point-of-sale operations.

Throughout the visit, Dawnta had the opportunity to ask questions about ice cream storage, popular flavors, product rotation, staffing levels, and what a busy summer day looks like.
This WBLE benefited Dawnta by strengthening several key pre-employment skills, including professional communication, task completion, following workplace procedures, food safety awareness, patience during customer interactions, and understanding employer expectations.
Experiences like this help bridge the gap between learning and doing — giving students the opportunity to explore career paths, develop transferable skills, and grow more confident in their abilities.
