RSVP, Inc. recently supported a Work-Based Learning Experience (WBLE) for a student at DIG RVA, a specialty pet nutrition and retail store focused on high-quality, natural pet products. During the visit, the student had the opportunity to connect with a team member and learn firsthand about career pathways in the pet nutrition and retail field, as well as the daily responsibilities of working in a small business environment.

Throughout the experience, the student gained exposure to pet nutrition by learning the differences between mainstream pet food and specialty products. They were guided through how to read ingredient labels and understand the nutritional value of various options, including organic, freeze-dried, and raw pet foods. The student made strong connections between human and animal nutrition, recognizing similarities in dietary needs, particularly around protein sources and ingredient quality.
The WBLE also provided an opportunity to build important workplace and communication skills. The student practiced professional communication by asking thoughtful questions, engaging in small talk with staff and customers, and observing real-time customer service interactions. A highlight of the experience included interacting with the store’s cat, which contributed to a welcoming and comfortable learning environment.

By the end of the visit, the student reflected on what they had learned, sharing that animals have many similarities to humans when it comes to their nutritional needs. When asked about future employment interests, the student expressed enthusiasm about the possibility of working in a similar environment, noting that they would enjoy a role in pet retail. RSVP, Inc. is proud to partner with local businesses like DIG RVA to provide meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that help students explore career interests, build essential skills, and prepare for future employment opportunities.
