When asked to describe himself, Glenn Heath often uses the word “hungry.” Glenn is hungry for success, hungry for education, and hungry for change.
Glenn works part-time at the S.E.E. (Support, Encourage, Empower) Recovery Center. It is sponsored by Encompass Community Supports in Culpeper and is an essential community resource. The S.E.E. Recovery Center employs 20+ Peer Recovery Specialists to provide support to individuals struggling with mental health and addiction.
Glenn sought out RSVP to help with his organizational skills and to work towards his PRS Certification. He had previously completed the 72-hour PRS training but was not able to complete his certification due to complicated testing requirements. RSVP Staff, Elizabeth Heflin worked alongside Glenn and supported him in a second PRS class and with the testing process. In January, Glenn took the PRS test and passed with flying colors. Moving forward, Glenn has set his sights on being a certified Peer with the Virginia Board of Counseling. Additionally, Glenn is now committed to keeping a calendar and is working with his supervisors to create a new intern curriculum for incoming Peers.
Over the past year, Glenn has partnered with his coworkers to host fundraisers, create person-centered programming, and support all visitors on their continuous road to recovery. The program that Glenn is most proud of is his Wilderness Empowerment Camp. Each summer, Glenn leads multiple groups of people on a transformative week away, consisting of ropes courses, bonfires, and hikes. He showcases his wilderness skills, while leading insightful conversations with individuals navigating recovery.
Another key part of Glenn’s daily responsibilities includes greeting visitors upon their arrival. He welcomes new visitors and provides them with a tour, going above and beyond his employer’s expectations.
Within one conversation, it is easy to see Glenn’s passion for his work and his peers. He often tells RSVP staff about his love for his job and the difference that he makes every day. Glenn teaches us that a job is not just a job. It is a means to connect, make a difference, and inspire change in our community.
Glenn has also spent time serving in the U.S. Military, working in the restaurant industry, and opening new businesses. He is a proud father and grandfather.
