Jamel Barkley started at Mary Washington Healthcare in Fredericksburg as a Project SEARCH intern and was later hired full-time as a technician in the Sterile Processing Department.
Project SEARCH is a unique, business-led transition program for young adults with disabilities. It provides students who want to work with an opportunity to explore careers and develop transferable job skills. Through this program, Jamel was able to smoothly transition from his internship to a temporary position and now into a full-time role.
Through his Project SEARCH internship, Jamel has “grown to be more independent” and “more confident with his social interactions.” His favorite part of the internship was going on field trips with friends, such as attending a Fredericksburg Nationals baseball game, and meeting new co-workers.
