Zach completed a 120-hour Work Experience at JJ’s Restaurant in Abingdon, Virginia. Initially, Zach worked alongside the dishwashers and completed introductory food preparation tasks. However, it quickly became evident that he was ready for more responsibilities. Zach progressed to making homemade dressing, training on the deep fryer, and working on the main grill.
When offered additional tasks, Zach eagerly accepted. He trained with JJ’s staff members and gained valuable experience working in a busy kitchen. Additionally, he collaborated with RSVP, Inc. staff members Elizabeth Heflin and Rachel Denton, who coached him on time management skills and self-advocacy. On Sundays, Zach played a key role in preparing salad dressings, homemade dips, corn muffins, and biscuits for the brunch rush. On trivia nights, he often worked on the deep fryer, preparing countless wings, fries, and chicken tenders.
One highlight of Zach’s Work Experience was preparing a meal from scratch for the owner, Joel. With Employment Specialist Rachel Denton, Zach planned and prepared an entrée and sides, creating Wasabi Chicken with a fried egg over a bed of rice. Throughout his experience, Zach also prepared several dishes, including burgers, shrimp alfredo, appetizers, and other menu items.
The conversations Zach had during his time at JJ’s were equally valuable. He enjoyed discussing future goals and learning from the owner and chefs about their experiences. Through these interactions, Zach gained insight into the key factors of running a business and working effectively in a high-pressure environment.
Zach’s passion for cooking extends beyond JJ’s kitchen. He is currently in his second year of Culinary Arts classes through Washington County Schools. Upon graduation, he plans to continue his culinary education and pursue a career in the industry, with a dream of owning and operating his own food truck.
